Another great, low-glycemic, hunger-busting, raw sweetener! Mesquite powder has nutmeg and cinnamon flavors with undertones of chocolate and coffee. Raw Fusion has tested many mesquite powders and this one has the best flavor and texture.
Source and Processing
For 2000 years, mesquite powder/flour was a staple food of Native Americans from the Texas to California area, because mesquite trees thrive in arid climates where other crops wither. The trees have small green leaves and yellow hanging seedpods. Mesquite pods were one of the most significant foods of the desert Apache, Pima, Cahuilla, Maricopa, Yuma, Mohave, and Hopi tribes.
This mesquite powder/flour is made from the seedpods of the mesquite tree from Argentina and Peru. It is organically grown, sun-dried and is powdered by using a super low-temperature process.
Benefits
Like many desert plants, the mesquite tree super concentrates nutrients in its seeds to compensate for the harsh environment. Consequently, it is so nutritious and mineral-rich that many consider it a "superfood."
Raw Fusion has tested many mesquite powders, most of which had large grains and a “woody” flavor. This powder tastes clean and sweet.
It is high in dietary fiber and protein, especially the essential amino acid lysine. Lysine is important for proper growth and plays an essential role in converting fatty acids into energy and helping to lower cholesterol. Lysine appears to help the body absorb and conserve calcium and it plays an important role in the formation of collagen, a substance important for bones and connective tissues including skin, tendon, and cartilage.
Mesquite powder is also a good source of potassium and zinc.
Its low glycemic index helps to stabilize blood sugar levels. Diabetics, weight watchers and those who want to eat healthier are key candidates for this powder.
People using meal replacement drinks and facing hunger pangs before lunch can utilize a nutritious mesquite meal. A tablespoon of mesquite meal with a drink can help stave off hunger for up to 4-6 hours. Newcomers to mesquite powder will find it a tremendous help in dieting and nutrition.
It can be used as either gluten-free flour or a superfood seasoning.
